I don't know how Purdue survives being in the new Big Ten. They are the third wheel in their own state. Not a hot destination in the new world of NIL.
 

Seems like he's still got a bright future. Maybe needs a few years head coaching at a lower level D1 school and then try again in the P4.
 


I had never seen a defense like his at Illinois before. Too bad he couldn’t do better at Purdue but hope he lands as a DC somewhere

I’m sure this was a sarcastic response to the threads from yesterday but there’s a giant difference between Purdue (which PJ has already turned down) and the jobs people were floating in that thread.

This was one of the worst Big 10 teams that I can remember. They were outscored 140-479 against FBS competition (with a big chunk coming in 1 game against Illinois).

To put that in perspective, when Brew was canned at 1-6, the Gophers were outscored 136-141 against FBS competition. We had averaged getting beat by 6.4 points per game. Purdue was averaging losing by 31 points per game against FBS competition.

I hope they miss on their next hire too.

Purdue is in the same discernment process we are in basketball. Do we really want to compete or are we satisfied with the highly paid loser role that fills the coffers for non revenue sports and paying administrative staff?. Fans will want to compete but schools may not want to and empty stadiums don’t mean what they used to.

Two years is a quick hook, but I get it. Especially after witnessing what their rival Indiana just did.

He’s been compensated over $8MM in two years to compile a 5-19 record, and he’s owed a buyout of over $9MM. That means Purdue is essentially paying him $3.4MM for every win he coached. You may think it’s too soon (it’s not), but sympathy is an odd feeling considering the circumstances. He got life-changing money to be horrific at his job. Boo hoo.

Literally all I am saying is that I don't like seeing coaches fired after just 2 years, especially in football.

I get why Purdue fired him, they took a significant step back in year 2, wish they had been on our schedule.

Walters is getting paid very well not to coach for them.....never said anything about sympathy or any crap like that. Just feel in general coaches should be given more than 2 years to get their systems in place. Sorry if that is tough for some of you to deal with.

Our AD thinks that if he doesn’t fire him it makes him look better. There is is a small percentage of the fanbase that buys this. Just look at this board. There is still people that think Ben is the answer.

LOL are there actually though? Haven't seen anyone actually post that in quite some time and I'm extremely active on the hoops board.

Just because some of us are willing to let the season play out before the inevitable likely firing doesn't mean we still (or ever) thought he was The Answer.

Couple years ago there was still a cadre of Ben defenders but even those peeps can see the forest for the trees by now.

What a load of BS......those that choose not to be negative aholes at all times over there might have been glad to see the team win some games but there is literally nobody over on the basketball board claiming things are great and Ben is the answer.....

Coaches used to have five years - I remember when it was a shock when a coach was fired for less than five years. Two years is ridiculous and totally unfair - even Barry Alvarez opened his long tenure at Wisconsin with three losing seasons.

You might be right. But sometimes people are not qualified for the job they get hired for.
Ryan Walters was never a head coach previous to Purdue. Two DC stints of two years each
and he vaults to head coach. They gambled, it did not work. If you are a defensive guru giving up 66 points TWICE in one season ....that's not good. And allowing 52, 50, 49, 45, and 38 against is not either.

I agree with you for the most part, you can be kind of bad when building your team but you can’t be THAT bad. This Purdue team was one of the worst teams in the history of the Big 10 and he inherited a program in decent shape. I think you need to let people build however you can’t put up blinders.

Purdue was historically bad this year and clearly the admin didn't feel there was any chance it was going to improve so they made the move. It is easy to see why the made the call they did but it is an unfortunate trend to see coaches getting less and less time to be successful.

The shorter leashes will lead to more coaches opting for quick fix solutions in an effort to win now as opposed to trying to build something sustainable. Indiana will be an interesting one to watch. They made a splash this year with some homerun transfers and a crazy soft schedule, but winning consistently there in football as proven to be an impossible task for previous coaches.

Unfortunately the time of being patient with anything seems to be coming to an end. Coaches are getting paid ridiculous money and with that expectations for immediate success have grown.

The portal explosion has really changed things as well. Used to be in football you had to give a coach multiple years for his first recruiting class to mature. Less patient fans and administrations can now demand that a coach go find the players they need from the portal in order to win now.

To me a football coach should get at least 4 years, but chances are we are going to see more and more cases like this one where a coach is fired after 2-3 years if they aren't winning.
