Pretty impressive regular-season numbers by Duke since the 1999-2000 season. Among major-conference programs, Dukies average RPI spanning last 11 seasons is nearly 5 places better than next-best Kansas.

Gophers have moved up two spots in each of Tubby's last two seasons, surpassing Iowa for 7th-best among Big Ten programs.

I'm Surprised UK Is 4th

Tubby coached there from 2000 through 2007. Gillispie in 2008 and 2009. Then Calipari in 2010.

For UK to be 4th best, Tubby's average RPI those 8 seasons must have been pretty decent.

Thanks for the revelation FOT. We weren't aware Tubby coached at UK before he came here.

What are Tubby and Donna having for dinner tonight?

As expected, you missed the point.

I'm surprised that those 8 years were good enough to yield 4th best RPI.

Thanks SS. Interesting to see.
Them's the facts, but weird/unexpected to see Texas above Michigan State. The proximity effect at work I guess.

The most interesting program to me is #8 Pitt. This shows just how consistent and somewhat underappreciated the Panthers have been during the regular season. They along with Kentucky & Tennessee are the only programs in the top 20 who have not appeared in a Final Four during this time span.

Shocking that Wisconsin is 6th, also points out what a horrible stretch it has been for Gopher Basketball to still be outside the top 50.

This is great SS. Fascinating stuff.

Here's a question for ya.

When was the last time (if ever) a team with the #1 RPI for a season won the National Title?

Duke, circa 2001

Since the 1999-2000 season, Duke (2001) is the only team to win the national title after finishing the regular season as the #1 team in the RPI. #3 appears to be the magic number (let's remember that next year when filling out our brackets). Going back to 2000, this year's Duke squad was the second consecutive and third overall to win the national title after finishing the regular season as the #3 team in the RPI.

Michigan State #13 (2000)
Duke #1 (2001)
Maryland #3 (2002)
Syracuse #9 (2003)
UConn #5 (2004)
North Carolina #6 (2005)
Florida #15 (2006)
Florida #6 (2007)
Kansas #5 (2008)
North Carolina #3 (2009)
Duke #3 (2010)

Just to clarify, is the 99-00 the first season used?

And assuming you have this on a spreadsheet, could you post the numbers if you started with the '01-02 season?

Great stuff as usual.
