Not that the loss to Ohio State was pretty for the defense, which gave up 590 yards and 48 points (two of OSU's scores were pick sixes). Defensive backs coach Brian Stewart watched tape of the game on the plane ride home.

"It was as bad as I thought it was going to be," Stewart said.

Banker said the "basics" were a struggle for the Nebraska defense.

"Eye discipline, reactions to where your eyes belong, reacting to a guard or whatever, some of those things were really lacking, especially as the game went on," Banker said.

Banker said he's not going to focus on why it happened during the game, but how to fix it for a game vs. Minnesota.

The Gophers, Banker said, "have kind of found their niche" with their two-headed running game featuring backs Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks. Minnesota's linemen are big, Banker said, and the Gophers have three dependable tight end. Minnesota runs power sweep and inside zone plays a lot, and quarterback Mitch Leidner throws playaction off of it.

Banker said Leidner is running a lot, often with a lead blocker.

"They're just solid," Banker said.

More from practice:

>> Quarterback Tommy Armstrong did not practice today, but that wasn't a surprise: He remains in the concussion protocol. NU coaches will know more about the availability of Armstrong on Wednesday and Thursday. In his absence, backup quarterback Ryker Fyfe got the starter's snaps Tuesday.

>> All of those injured linemen practiced on Tuesday. That's David Knevel and Tanner Farmer, but also Jerald Foster — who's trying to return just three months after a MCL tear in his knee — and a couple freshmen who had been dinged up in recent week. It was a robust group.

>> Linebacker Dedrick Young didn't practice. Bray said NU will look at junior Chris Weber at outside linebacker if neither Young nor Marcus Newby are healthy enough to play. Weber is a middle 'backer and Josh Banderas' backup. Another OLB option, Bray said, could be redshirt freshman Mohamed Barry.

>> Banker said safety Aaron Williams made a good play early in the game by taking two Ohio State blockers out, but one of them was a Buckeye lineman who slammed him to the ground.

"He got banged around in there," Banker said. Williams didn't look quite right the rest of the game.

We have three dependable tight ends?

I thought Beebe had some great blocks in that last game. Probably adding him to the list with Wozniak and Lingen (even though he's hurt)
