Fleck and his new top assistant, who replaced Kirk Ciarrocca on Jan. 3, are both under age 40 and climbed to become young, offensive-focused head coaches in their mid-30s. They’re polished speakers who pride themselves on being magnetic recruiters, energetic, charismatic leaders with sarcastic sides.

Fleck pointed to Sanford’s years as head coach of Western Kentucky in 2017-18 as a boost to Minnesota, from how Fleck can use him as a sounding board to that experience being overall advantage for the program.

“It’s nice to be able to have a person like that to be able to bounce things off of when you are maybe having those head-coach days that you need a head coach to give you advice,” Fleck said. “Instead of being able to call somebody on the phone, I can just walk down the hallway and ask him.”
