Central Michigan’s Zeigler helps get Gophers ready for Big Ten guards

When the Gophers are playing Ohio State’s William Buford and Michigan’s Tim Hardaway Jr. in Big Ten Conference play they can look back on tonight’s Central Michigan game for some tips on how to defend a shooting guard with NBA-type size.
The Chippewas’ 6-foot-5, 200-pound sophomore Trey Zeigler might be one of the biggest guards Minnesota has seen during the nonconference schedule this season. The Gophers shouldn’t have to worry about him going on a three-point shooting spree like so many other guards have through the first 11 games. Zeigler does most of his scoring slashing to the basket or by rebounding, averaging 18 points and eight rebounds a game this season. He’s only 2-for-9 from three-point range this year.
Expect Gophers’ sophomore Austin Hollins to get a shot at defending Zeigler. Freshman Andre Hollins will return from an ankle injury to play tonight. But he might not be ready to keep up with an athletic scorer like Zeigler just yet.
Zeigler was recruited hard by Gophers coach Tubby Smith in to be part of Minnesota’s 2010 class, but he couldn’t compete with Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA — and of course, Zeigler’s father, Central Michigan coach Ernie Zeigler. A funny story about the recruitment of Zeigler was that Smith actually tried to convince Zeigler’s father that coaching his son in college wasn’t going to be as easy as it might seem. Obviously, Smith would know coaching sons, G.G. and Saul, at Georgia and Kentucky, respectively. But there’s no way Ernie Zeigler could pass up coaching a talent like his son who was one of the top 10 shooting guards in the nation coming out of Mount Pleasant High School in Michigan.
In 2009-10, Smith tried to recruit another player who ended up playing for his father in college. Detroit sophomore point guard Ray McCallum, who played with Gophers senior Trevor Mbakwe on the World University Games team in China, considered Minnesota early in the recruiting process. But McCallum dropped the Gophers off his list with programs such as Arizona, UCLA and Florida in the mix in the end with Detroit. McCallum’s averaging 15 points, five rebounds and four assists this season for his father. Too bad Smith didn’t have any more kids.
