P.J. Fleck went full botanist during his postgame comments following the Gophers’ 48-31 loss to Iowa in the battle for Floyd of Rosedale on Saturday.

The Gophers head coach compared his young players to planted seeds and how well they have germinated (read: produced on the field so far this season).

“It’s like planting crops and they are all supposed to grow at the same time — that’s what you expect,” Fleck said. “Every row is supposed to grow at the same time, same temperature, same size. We kind of have spotted growth right now. This row is growing a little faster than that row is growing a little slower than that row. That row hasn’t even grown yet. This row is just unbelievable and until we keep growing as a team, some of the results could be like that.”

Here’s a look at some of the Gophers’ yields:

SPROUTING >
RECEIVERS

For the first time since the 21-14 win over Fresno State on Sept. 8, the Gophers received production from its full complement of wideouts.

Freshman Rashod Bateman had the first two-touchdown game of his career; Tyler Johnson bounced back from a substandard game two weeks ago against Maryland to rack up 107 yards on seven receptions; Chris Autman-Bell added leaping 34-yard reception and nearly pulled down a couple of other deep balls.

“We’ve made huge strides — look at our wideouts,” Fleck said.
