"I'm cautiously optimistic about this next season," Kill said Monday, as one of a host of Gophers coaches and athletic administration who were at Sombery Golf Course for the "Gopher Road Trip Chalk Talk 2013," a fundraiser for Gophers athletics.

One of Kill's primary reasons for optimism is a defense that showed vast improvement last year. It's led by a guy who's being billed as a bona fide star, 6-foot-6, 311-pound defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman.

Hageman, with rare speed and explosiveness for someone his size, is certainly on the radar of professional scouts. He had six sacks last year.

"He'd probably going to be a first-round draft choice after next season," Kill said.

Kill said Hageman is the kind of guy you build a program around.

"You win with great players," he said.

Kill points out that Edwards ran the 100-meter dash in 10.5 seconds, one of the fastest times in the nation among high schoolers.

"Because of his speed, Berkley is a key player for us," Kill said. "We need him."
