Possible position changes for next season?

I'm just trying to think of some guys who might get moved to different positions. I realize that a lot of depends on who our next coach is, but I thought maybe a football related thread might be fun.

Cooper to SS - - - - I think this is a pretty high possibility
Edwards to LB - - - - - Another one that I think is very likely
Bennett to WR - - - -- -The guy can catch the ball and their might be less time with it divided between Eskridge, Kirkwood, Wright (is he still here?).
Possibly one of the DE's moved to LB just to add more size to the position.

Any other possibilities?
 

This might get me ripped by some...

Depends on who the coach is, but I can see Bennett making a transition to slot-receiver. Gray's fate will depend on who the coach is as well. I know he wants to play QB, but the kid is a first-rounder as a WR.
 

There is a serious lack of playmakers on this team. that will not change a lot next year. Somebody has to make plays, and getting the ball to Gray 6 times per game is not enough. The new guy should want to steal as many games as he can, and he will do that better with a great athlete at quarterback than with him at receiver teamed with a quarterback who has never started a game. Putting the ball in Gray's hands fifty times per game is a lot of opportunities to make things happen for a creative OC.
 


I don't think Bennett will be moved to WR, he doesn't have the height to play on the outside or the quickness to play the slot. Eskridge would be a better candidate to move assuming that both of those upperclassment are pushed by the freshman backs. I would hope that Green will be back next year and we will have a good WR lineup of McKnight, Green, Allen.
 

I could see one or two of the smaller linebackers being moved to Saftey (either Rallis or Cooper).
 

No chance Duane Bennett plays receiver. Too slow to play in the slot and not elusive enought to play in the slot. Not big enough to play outside. Bennett will evenutally be the 3rd down back exclusively.

I do not think Rallis is fast enough to play safety. He moved to LB and put on a bunch of pounds.

Here is what I would guess.

1. Edwards to LB
2. Some shifting among positions within the OL
3. Let's hope Hageman is done changing positions
4. What DE's could play LB? My guess is no change like that will occur
5. GRAY TO QB!
 

Bennett is staying put - I doubt Devon Wright even ends up playing here.

Rallis will stay at LB and I doubt we'll see anyone moved to LB
 



Alot will have to do with the schemes the new coach brings in.
Calhoun, Sumlin, and Golden all run a 3-4 scheme for what it's worth.
In that case it would be:
Garin, KGM, and Wilhite to LB
Kirksey to DE
 

As odd as it seems:

Stoudermire back to wr. Seems to be more depth at db though TS has quickly become one of the better DBs in the last few weeks.

WR: McKnight, Allen, Green, Keise, Gray (hopefully not), Hutton, Wilson, Barker

CB: Carter, Vereen, Henderson, Bouie, Johnson

For players currently on the roster, we have at least 8 WR, 4 of whom have shown to be at least capable starters in the Big Ten, if not more.

At CB, we have two guys who have started (one of whom coulda been a contender, but has apparently forgotten how to play football), two who have seen a lot of action as mediocre replacements, and one who's never seen the field.

What am I missing?

I just do not see that happening. What depth is there at CB next year?

Take Troy out of that group? Oh boy...

On the other hand, at WR you will have McKnight, Green & Allen. Plus Keise. IMO it is much easier to find a servicable WR than a servicable DB. Keep Troy on defense.
 


Any chance Gray doesn't play QB, but is used more like Percy Harvin was/is? That is, move him all over the sets and get him the ball in multiple different ways - throw downfield, slot, reverses, hand-off in backfield, direct snap, direct snap then he throws it???

Just a thought.
 

Pretty sure that a new coach will come in and open the QB position to a competition. I am more concerned about defense.

Depends on the coach. I think it is unfair to Gray to compare him with Percy Harvin. Harvin is a
5'11" 190lbs rock who is supremely fast, extremely elusive and is almost never tackled by the first or one defender. This is a side topic, but I would argue that Harvin is one of the top 3 offensive talents in the NFL right now.

Gray on the other hand is a 6'4" 235lb QB, playing out of position (though he is pretty good) who is not nearly as fast or elusive as Harvin. I could not picture Gray lined up as a RB (like Harvin was at times at Florida) or being nearly as effective as Harvin taking the ball on a fly sweep.

I understand the thought process, but I think the comparison is unfair to Gray. Personally, I would prefer Gray as a QB in a some sort of spread system that utilizes both his running and passing abilities.
 




Ok you caught me, but Blahblahblah or whatever his name is has been saying for quite a while that Edwards will not be a RB for whatever reason even though he has always been projected as a RB and went through this whole year as a running back and appears to be progressing very well. Still Bob is convinced he can not be a running back.

My thought on the subject is that we may have more depth at RB than LB and a kid of Edwards reported athleticism might help more on the defensive side of the ball. If I remember correctly, it was not determined until this fall that he would be a RB or LB. I do not think a change is out of the question. Remember Hageman spent basically his entire RS year playing TE.

Strength is at linebacker next year. I think Tinsley and Beal as inside linebackers may put your best two defensive players on the field with Reeves, Cooper, and Rallis on the outside. Talent may side with 3-4.

I actually never said that Edwards will for sure be playing LB, I said that I think it is likely that he will switch over to LB.

You said "Edwards is a RB. End of Discussion".

You can't really be dense enough not to understand the difference those two kinds of statements.

While I don't mind a 3-4, I hope we don't base any system we incorporate on our current depth.

True and false. They shouldn't decide to not hire Ken (Navy Coach) because we currently don't have multiple talented backs on the roster, but if he was hired I would expect him to pass more than once every 4-5 plays because that is where the offensive talent (McKnight, Allen) is. We need a system that while it has an identity is based on shades of Gray to capitalize on current talent.
 

I'm currently a Kool-Aid drinker/Homer. If Leach is hired I'd probably switch to Hater, as I'm really hoping defense is a concern with our hire.

When I look at it the wr, I see numbers but little talent beyond McKnight (if Gray is qb). Green is the real x-factor, if he comes back and is good that alleviates alot. My take was based on a coach wanting to have speed and talent to help out a QB likely running for his life. I may be wrong but given the present roster, I still have a feeling Stoudermire ends up on the O side of the ball with a new coach.
