Not sure if this is a good idea, or perhaps a decent idea but not worth carrying out. We have lost Gopherholers due to the fact they have passed on. Gopherholers have lost family members or spouses who were Gopher fans.

Why not annually on a selected day we put out Gopher flags on a designated day once a year in memory of those who have passed on? What date? Well I pulled up three significant people who have had tremendous success while with the program.

Personally I like to put the flag out on June 6th as Stephens was a pioneer of sort if you look at his bio below. Were all about the Rose Bowl and as said he was one of the first National Recruits that took a chance on us so in a sense he was part of the foundation. Thoughts? Other ideas? Not do this?

Sanford Emory Stephens II (September 21, 1940 – June 6, 2000

Stephens was the first black man to play quarterback at the University of Minnesota and remains the only quarterback to take the Gophers to the Rose Bowl (1961 and 1962). He was one of the first "National Recruits" for the University of Minnesota, along with Judge Dickson and Bill Munsey

Raymond P. "Ray" Christensen (May 6, 1924 – February 5, 2017) was an American sportscaster who was the play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Golden Gophers sports teams from 1951 until 2001, working for WCCO in Minneapolis starting in 1963.[1][2]

Or if we didn't want to pick a date due to a player. We could go with the first Saturday of August when the masses start getting a little excited about watching football again. A chance to reflect before the season begins. All at the same time encouraging more people yet to get a Gopher flag to put out on your house.

Stephen's also was named the nation's first black All-American quarterback in '62. That is a legacy that should make all gopher fans proud.

Date of Goph's first official game? Per Wikipedia...

The Minnesota Golden Gophers college football team played its first game on September 29, 1882, a 4–0 victory over Hamline University.

Not sure of the scoring back then to get 4 points.

Brilliant idea #2- will proudly fly the flag in Portland. How about using Stephen’s birthday which would often occur early in the Big 10 slate?

Two safeties?

I like this. I'm up for Stephens or Ray. I actually think Ray did more over a longer period of time for Gopher sports than just about anyone with the exception of Sid. I might even vote for Sid.

My brother and I spent the whole 2019 season wishing we could have called up my Dad. He would have not remotely believed what he was seeing. Without him and my grandparents, I'm no Gopher fan. Every bit of what they instilled in me allowed me to truly enjoy the season of my lifetime.

How about the 3rd Saturday in September through the 4th Saturday in September? It's a whole week, but that will encompass Stephens' birthday and at least one Gopher game, if not two.

All good ideas. In addition, we could have an ongoing In Memoriam thread so we can have one place to post and find information about deceased Gopher fans, players and staff.
