There has been a lot of threads on GH that started and/or ended with media bashing. How about a new thread discussing media types that you like. Local or national. Just trying to have a positive thread on a negative day.

Dana O'Neil of ESPN.com is the best college hoops writer in the business right now, IMO. She's the one who had that great piece on Clem last year and has continued to write in-depth, profile type of articles that are thoughtful, insightful and informative. She isn't caught up in the "being first" or isn't interested in making herself part of the story - and bravo to ESPN.com for investing in this type of journalism which is not common enough.

Go Gophers!!

Yes I am resurrecting my own thread. I first posted this on the 31st and I only had one replay. Was it because it was meltdown time or does no one have anything good to say about the media.

Locally, Marcus Fuller does a good job. Myron, not so much. Sid's always been a Gopher homer, but that's OK as on offset to some of the others. Ruesse's generally been fair to the Gophers outside of Brewster. He can't seem to be too objective there. He is a good writer, biases aside.

Nationally, I kind of like Andy Katz, though he is a commie Badger. I generally find the rest of the ESPN talking heads pretty worthless, especially online. The guy on CBS Sports.com is pretty good as well (I blieve that is Gary Parrish unless I'm mixing him up with someone.)

I know he's a homer. I know he cares more about friendship than truth. He couldn't predict the outcome of a one on one match between James and Lou Costello. But, I still like Sid. All you have to do is skip the first column and a half of his news paper article and go directly to the Jottings section.

On yeah. I know he forgets everybody's name. Always seeks the lime light. Is losing his hearing. Has a perment frog in his throat and... Well we could all go on and on.

Bill Simmons - ESPN - IMO his podcasts are worth a listen. His humor and intelligence is spot on for me.....

I like Erin Andrews and ESPN.

Play-by-play: (1a) Bob Picozzi (ESPN/ESPN+), (1b) Dave Sims (ESPN/ESPN+).

Runners-up: Ron Franklin (ESPN) and Steve Physioc (Fox).

In-game analyst: Shon Morris (BTN). He's been great for a long time. Talented and witty. Best one-liners in the business.

Runner-up: Marques Johnson (Fox). As a group, Fox/Pac 10's play-by-play guys and analysts are second to none. ... "Yakka"!

Internet reporter/columnist: Pat Forde (ESPN.com)' Love his "Forde" Minutes.

Runner-up: Gary Parrish (CBSSportsline.com). Informative, knows his stuff, not too overbearing, doesn't take himself too seriously.

In-studio analyst: Doug Gottlieb (ESPN). Quite often too abrasive, but what I like is he doesn't cow-tow to big-name coaches or programs. When ESPN starts talking extensively about the bubble, outside of Joe Lunardi this is the guy you should listen to. He does his homework.

Runner-up: Jimmy Dykes (ESPN). I absolutely can't stand Dykes as an in-game analyst, but he does yeoman's work in studio.

(former) Sideline reporter: Michelle Tafoya (CBS/WCCO). A pro's pro. She's the rarest of rare. ... an attractive woman who truly knows and likes sports. Was easy to see she had big time written all over when she was part of local coverage of Gophers' '97 Final Four run.

Runner-up: Erin Andrews (ESPN). Appeals to men of all ages. I wonder why? Enough said.

(former) Beat writer: Jeff Shelman (Strib). Gopher basketball fans went from feast to famine when Jeff left the beat.

Runner-up: Marcus Fuller (Pioneer Press).

Local columnist: Patrick Reusse (Strib). I disagree with him quite often, but he knows how to rile up readers (read: get them to pay attention to what he has to say).

Runner-up: Remainder of sports columnists in this town are crap.

Local TV and radio category:

Mark Rosen.....the best

Great to see Joe Schmidt back in action

I find it interesting that many posters complain of media that are Gopher negative and yet many of those same posters also chide Sid for being a homer.

For info I think Mike Max is often the best.

All around worst category: Dark Starr

In the national category:

John Saunders and Mitch Albom on ESPN The Sports Reporters.....Lupica sucks

Kornheiser and Wilbon on PTI....great show and the perfect set-up for dvr/vcr

One whom I never see any more, Frank Deford on SI fame.

One local one I forgot, and my favorite...Morgan Mundane(Sports Editor of The Congressional Record).

I can't stand ESPN's analysts for a lot of sports, but I think their college basketball crew is the class of the network. Jay Bilas and Hubert Davis do a great job and never show a bias toward Duke and UNC. Along with the espn guys I really like Clark Kellog and Gus Johnson. I also think Bobby Knight is great as an in studio analyst. I never liked him as a coach, but he is funny, honest, and he definitely knows his stuff. His last few years in the booth have completely changed my opinion on him. Pat Forde is my favorite college basketball writer, even though he writes about UK too much.

I wish they still had the HotList on ESPNEWS...That show was my personal favorite.
