This is a place to let off some steam and make your move to improve Gopher basketball.

My move:

Fire Ben now. Promote the defensive minded assistant for the rest of the year. (I can’t remember his name but hey he used to coach Ben in HS)

Start a search to line up NIL investments from companies to get a hiring package for the spring.

Then give the fruits of the salary structure payouts to the best qualified coach I can find.

Probably Nikko

But I’d still secretly want to hire someone I could give total control too. And let them go full Dion!

If I am in Coyle's shoes you don't fire him now but you make sure you have everything lined up to move quickly in the hiring process after the season.

You committed to giving him year 4 so you don't over react to this loss and you let things play out over the remainder of the season. But early returns are not encouraging so if Coyle doesn't have a good feel for who he will go after when the time comes he isn't doing his job.

It will be highly surprising if Johnson is fired during the season.

If this year goes off the rails I would bet Johnson does not get a 5th year.

I think there is little chance Medved comes here. Our NIL rules out pretty much anyone worthwhile. Maybe he loves MN and the school and wants to come no matter what but believe there’s little chance of that.

Does anyone actually know what are NIL is for basketball? Fleck seemed pretty happy with it for football and article I read today says power conferences are close to having contracts and caps on NIL money with help from Congress.
I'm sure Garcia is getting a pretty good sum this year.

Go out and see the local big hitters. Listen to them. That would be unique. Ask them what it would take to get them behind the program in a big way.

Then prepare to go all in with the cash it takes to get great coach and let the boosters take care of the NIL.

I can only imagine the "text messages of anger" that Coyle is sending his wife right now about the condition of the basketball program he's enabled and presided over.

The condition of the program is on his shoulders and his shoulders only. The initial decision to hire him may have been made from above him, but Joan exited the building over a year ago. This is Coyle's mess and his mess only.

What you don't change, you choose.

Go Gophers!!

We brought a coach back for a fourth year with a 25.4% conference winning percentage. How bad could the season possibly go to force a move and make the AD think he isn't getting exactly what he signed up for?

You’re paying him anyway. If I’m the AD, I’m making him sweat it out and have to continually answer presser questions as to why they stink. Then fire him with a few game to go in the season to officially get a jump on the process. For as bad as this season probably will be, turning the program over to the assistants will only make this clown show more clowny.

Obviously, he should already be talking to people through agents.

As someone who thinks CBJ is one of the worst coaches ever, there is 0 reason to fire him mid season. We don't seem overly flush with cash so no reason to waste a few $$. Furthermore, in today's age we aren't worried about keeping anyone either. I'd argue the only kid we need is Asuma, and with his brother just signing, that feels like a near lock.

Fire him the day his buyout goes down. But, in the meantime Coyle needs to have his list and homework done so we can pounce immediately after the year. Know what our budget is, know what donors/boosters want. I think in today's NIL world, there is 0 reason to worry about a local connection, this isn't 1986, no one is staying home just to stay home. It's all about $$ so whoever the people with the deepest pockets want, that's who you go get.

Thorson should be the head coach, today. Ben should be cleaning out his office.
Coyle has to look for and find a detailed, charismatic, young coach who will cover every scenario to success. Who that is, I have no idea.

Were I the AD, I'd know the difference between "your" and "you're."

Also, I'd be almost 2 years into the new head basketball coach's tenure.

“your” - is used to indicate ownership of something. Like your move.

“You’re” is a contraction meaning “you are”. Which is grammatically incorrect in the sentence I wrote.

Leave correction to the English teachers.

And I frequently misuse the English language, after all, “I are an engineer.”

Well, the second "your" in the title of the thread is used correctly, but not the first.

If I'm the AD, I don't overreact to one loss to a team that was in the same neighborhood in the analytic rankings who we played without some key players and with others not fully healthy.

Still, put the feelers out and get more NIL.

If it were just a loss, I might agree, but last night was a game with no game plan. It was like watching a pickup game at the Y. Ben had no plan. A head coach cannot do that.

I'll ask the question - how much does Mark Coyle really care about basketball? Coyle's #1 priority is Football. Kissing PJ Fleck's butt is at 1A. Pat Reusse says he's been told that almost all of the Gophers' NIL money goes to football.

as I noted in another thread, Dinkytown Athletes just did a big matching-funds campaign - and said flat-out that the proceeds would go to Football and Volleyball.

Sure, the powers-that-be at the U would like to see Men's hoops generate more revenue. But is that really a priority?

Nothing will happen during the season. after the season, Coyle will announce that he is evaluating the program. after a week or so, Coyle will announce that Ben Johnson is leaving as Head Coach, but Coyle will claim it was "a mutual decision." Coyle will announce "a national search" for a new Head Coach. and then he'll hire a coach who is willing to take the job for the lowest possible salary.
and the wheel goes around and around and around and around......

Certainly understand your argument, and it could absolutely play out that way. I think the hiring of Coach P for the women's team (and signing of a very highly ranked recruit) is a good sign hopefully for the men's program as well. I'm not expecting a Muss type of splash but I hold out hope it will be a high quality candidate.

Bring in TT!!!! Ex Gopher, Ex NBA player, Loves the Gopher.

Treyton Thompson? Not sure he loves the Gophers.

Oh, Trent Tucker!?

We can't be at that spot in the coaching search already, are we?

Go Gophers!!
