From Miami of Ohio.

Who made the better hire?
Their guy beat our guy in the MAC championship game.

Only time will tell, but you're not saying that he is the better coach because his squad beat Kill's squad this year right?????

If you use that logic, then Iowa should hire Horton.

MAC

People want to bash the MAC, but they must be doing something right. Three of their coaches are now working at BCS gigs.

Nice hire by Pitt.

I guess we will see who wins in the battle of the mid Majors.

Kill or Heywood.

Only thing is Pitt has a HUGE advantage over Minnesota as it is easier to win in the Big East!

The MAC has always been known as a hotbed for coaching talent. Those who really know
football have long known this.

At Miami, for instance, there's an understanding: You get hired, you do well, then you get
hired at a bigger job. That's how they got the reputation as the 'Cradle of Coaches'.
Its been that way for 80 years there.

The entire MAC is like that. MAC coaches don't stay there forever, and MAC schools know this.

I agree, but it is still amusing that fans get so worked up when their school hires a MAC coach.

Haywood did beat Kill and he deserves credit, but if not for a total breakdown on 4th down by Kill's defense, NIU wins that game and Haywood looks the fool, as he had a chance to go up by two scores right before half and got cute by trying to fake a field goal. I think he'll do fine at Pitt, he's a young coach and it showed there.

Wow, people took my comment about Miami beating NIU in the MAC title game way to personally. Just pointing out who he was and why his resume might be better. I honestly want to know who people think made the better hire. Chill out.

I think we made the better hire. I would argue that for most of the season Northern Illinois was the more dominant MAC school. More than that, Kill has a lot more experience as a HC. My position on Haywood was always that he seemed to be a pretty good coach but there wasn't nearly as much on his resume to look at. What was on his resume was very similar to Kill, I just would have preferred Kill because he has been a head coach for more than two seasons, and he's turned around more than 1 program.

In all honesty, I wouldn't have been upset about hiring Haywood.

I personally think both Kill and Haywood will do well. If Haywood turns out to be better, or vice versa, so be it. I think Haywood may have a bit of an inflation factor right now just because he pulled off that last minute upset over Kill.

Haywood also started his coaching career with the Gophers. Who knew.

Haywood is a younger coach with only two years under his belt. We obviously were looking for a bit more experience this time around. You can't use one game that was decided on the final drive as a deciding factor in who is going to be the better coach.

When we compare these hires down the road, I hope our fans realize that we're playing against Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State every year rather than UConn, Cincinnati, WVU and South Florida.

so this line of thinking would go Kill beat Golden therefore Minnesota made a better hire than Miami.

I was driving in Pittsburgh last night and heard the radio show guy and several callers discuss Leach and basically re-hash the same conversations we've had on here.

All in all, there is the same feel to this hire as to ours. Un-sexy, solid choice made in lieu of people's choice; Leach.
