Pitino to Morris: "You almost had a triple-double with the steals and turnovers."

per the Winston Salem Journal:

Richard Pitino strolled through a small tunnel on Tuesday night in the recesses of Joel Coliseum after Minnesota’s 84-69 win over Wake Forest. With his players walking well ahead of him, he occasionally looked up from a stat sheet that was still warm from a copier in order to chat with no one in particular.

No one in particular, that is, until he honed in on an unsuspecting target.

Carlos Morris walked a few paces ahead of his coach. A junior guard, Morris had 15 points and eight steals for the Golden Gophers –– a commendable game for a team that was efficient on both ends of the floor. Still Pitino’s eyes continued to scan Morris’ line to see he also had six turnovers.

“Hey, Carlos, you almost had a triple-double with the steals and turnovers,” Pitino said without breaking stride. “Nice job, buddy.”

Ah, some acerbic wit. Pitino comes by it and much more honestly.

Go Gophers!!

I love Pitino's humor. Hopefully Morris can clean up his mistakes before B1G play. If he can do that, then I think he is going to be a huge plus for us. He just needs to focus on better shot selection and reducing his turnovers. It's easier to reduce turnovers than it is to increase steals, so I'm optimistic.

I don't think I like that comment. Not really a confidence booster, or even constructive criticism

If you listen to Pitino in an interview or press conference, you'll understand that it's a good-natured ribbing when he says stuff like that.

Comments like that usually come off more poorly in writing than they do in person. In person it was probably delivered in a good natured way.

Particularly when there is a relationship of support and trust in place.

Later in the article you will read this comment from Morris:

“His name of course helps him a little bit, but he’s a great coach,” Morris said. “He’s going to get it done and he’s getting it done.”

I think you could safely say that Morris took it pretty well.
