Teague was reluctant to discuss specifics of the search on Thursday, preferring to circle back to the point that Pitino was the ''right fit'' for the Gophers all along. He insisted that the 30-year-old who had just one season of head coaching experience at Florida International was always on his list, even though at the time it appeared that he was far down that list after Smart and Hoiberg both signed extensions to remain at their schools and others,
including Saunders, reportedly turned them down.

Thanks for the reference! Seems Gopher Illustrated was just rehashing the weeks events.

I find it interesting that back in the "Shaka thread" there was a "ESPN insider" who said that while one of the names he was hearing that was interested and being discussed for the job was Pitino. Everyone assumed it meant Rick, but I am wondering if they had the name right, just not the first one. I just find it interesting if that source was correct that his name may have been floating around there at the very beginning. Someone can post a link, but right now I don't have the time to go through those 90 pages to find the exact quote.

I remember reading that too.

I remember it...but at the time it seemed to be written as joke and not as a serious mention.

According to the AP article, Tubby Smith was the first Gopher coach to win a game in the NCAA Tournament. That's not true. Both Jim Dutcher and Clem Haskins won games in the tournament as the Gopher's head coach. Dutcher won 1, a 62-61 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1982, and Haskins won 10 (4 of which were later forfeited). See http://ericthrall.com/gophers/basketball/ In 1989 we made the Sweet Sixteen, the next year, the Elite 8, and in 1997, the Final Four.

Good find vanklomp. Eventually I think all big news will relate back to the Richmondinsider Thread of March 27.

Gopherfanatic19 was onto something with coach P.

Wow Major news coming from Bristal!

In retrospect I think that ESPN angle in the richmondinsider thread was complete bunk.

I don't think that Rick and Rich were confused for each other....ever.

However, I think what happened was simply that they had a handful of guys on their list that they liked. Some of them made it clear they were happy with where the were but upon interviewing Pitino they possibly uncovered the best candidate for the job, someone who best fits their vision for the program.

That's not to say they didn't want Smart or Fred but it sounded like that some of the candidates (Saunders in particular) didn't have a vision for the program the meshed with what the AD wanted. So, I do think that Norwood Teague got his guy. Time will tell of Teague's guy was the right guy.

station, it's too much for one to handle. Picking on Parski is, after all, a 3 man and a boy job.

You might be right Doc, it really has become a burden. I need to consider delegating. I'll have my people get a hold or your people.
