per Marcus:

Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith would receive an extra year on his contract by advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament with a win over Florida on Sunday, March 24.

Entering the tournament, Smith's future as Minnesota's coach was considered uncertain. But he received a $150,000 bonus for winning in the second round against UCLA on Friday, and he would receive $200,000 plus the one year added to his contract for winning in the third round Sunday.

Those cash bonuses, along with the opportunities to earn an extra year, were among the terms of the contract extension Smith signed in July, effective through the 2016-17 season.

The Gophers' fortunes in the NCAA tournament, however, don't affect the $2.5 million buyout on his contract.

Go Gophers!!

As long as the buy-out remains the same, the extra year means nothing.
