Gophers basketball: Will Richard Pitino be Norwood Teague's legacy?

Fair or unfair, Norwood Teague's legacy at Virginia Commonwealth was discovering Shaka Smart. Teague hired the Florida assistant as VCU basketball coach. Smart led the school to the Final Four in his second season.

Fair or unfair, Teague now has created at least an early legacy at the University of Minnesota with another basketball move. He is the athletics director who replaced Tubby Smith with Richard Pitino.

Go Gophers!!

Teague's legacy at VCU from the POV of Minnesota is Shaka Smart. We don't know what his legacy really is to people out there. If you mean his legacy re. basketball only, maybe.

And here, is Pitino his legacy. Only if he doesn't hire a winning football coach someday.

Norwood's legacy can only get better. When I think of Norwood I think of a guy who gave UNC $800,000 so we did not have to play them in football. UNC about the 50th best team in College Football....

I get people's frustration with that situation, but if you are a coach considering taking a job at the U of M and you saw the AD pay 800K to do what the football coach thought was best for the program, I think that shows an AD who supports his coaches. Even with the PR hit he took from the public.

It is UNC. Norwood should have told Kill no it is UNC not LSU. I would have been embarassed as a player if my coach asked to have UNC removed from the schedule because he did not think we could compete. What message does that send to players? Embarassing.

I would have been embarassed to remove UNC from the schedule if they did it for free let alone to pay them $800K.

Guarantee if Kill and Norwood had a chance to that over again I think the Gophers would still be playing UNC so I think it is obvious Norwood is 0-1.

This whole thing made no sense to me. Just dumb.

Wait a minute here XMan. You are not allowed to talk about GopherHole commentors that way. Admin is very protective of their no nonsense posters.

At VCU, basketball was the marquee sport. at the U of M, Teague is overseeing a program with multiple D-1 sports, including a FB program that needs to improve to generate more revenue.

If Pitino somehow leads the Men's BB program to national prominence, that will certainly look good for Teague - but Teague's legacy is going to be tied to the overall athletic program - especially the health of the FB program.

If Men's BB is going well, but FB is struggling and they can't sell out a 50,000 seat stadium, then I suspect the Twin Cities media will paint Teague NOT as the guy who hired Pitino, but as the guy who couldn't turn around the FB program. Heck, Reusse probably has that column written already.
