per Marcus:

Jerry Kill seemed excited talking Wednesday about the candidates for the starting running back competition next spring. He mentioned some names that will be in the mix, including last year’s top recruit Jeff Jones, who is attending classes but not practicing.

“Rodrick (Williams) is an awful good player,” Kill said Wednesday. “And then Berkley (Edwards) is a different style of back, but when he gets all the repetition just like David…the kid we have redshirted (Rodney Smith) is really good. Then Jeff Jones is doing well right now, really well.”

Kill can’t talk about incoming recruits until they sign, but he said they’ve got backs coming in from 200 to 230 pounds, “and they all can run.” He’s referring to James Johannesson from North Dakota, Shannon Brooks from Georgia and Jonathan Femi-Cole from Canada. All three are expected to compete to play as freshmen.

Go Gophers!!

Hope we find a good one!

How many games do we win this year without David?

*cringe*

I hear they have a guy walking on who is really good. His name is Peter Adrianson.

We are deep are RB. With the way DC has played this year, we haven't been able to have the RB by committee like we have the last few years. So, some of that depth may be "untested". But, their certainly isn't a lack of talent/potential.

We have so many good young guys. Rodney Smith is a beast and Jeff Jones is suppose to be THE man. It will be interesting to see how they develop and if one of them can step into the number 1 role. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nugget getting the starting job out of the gate with the young guys splitting 40% of the carries in non conference with one of them emerging as the number one mid season.

Marcus says Cobb has three games left. Um, by my calculations he has four. Guess it depends on your perspective.

Really, really wish we'd have redshirted Cobb his freshman year.

31 Banham, Cole
22 Bennett, Duane
27 Cobb, David
32 Edwards, Lamonte
33 Gatling, Cameron
20 Kirkwood, Donnell
25 Wright, Devon

He was the 3rd back, so I don't think it was really an option.

I think Jeff Jones will be our starting back next year….with the Gophers running the ball so much, we really are getting quite solid recruits at the RB position. Probably will take a step back next year mostly because Jones missed fall practices. But the following year & going forward I would be surprised if we didn't have excellent, experienced backs year after year after year.

A few things that I won't have to worry about when thinking about the 2015 Gophers:

1. Will our punter be any good.
2. Do we have enough depth and talent at DB.
3. Do we have someone that can replace David Cobb.

As for everything else, go ahead and worry. We're as stacked as we've been since the Barber/Maroney days at RB.

And plenty of people were telling us what a waste David Cobb was before the beginning of last season.

What folks were that? I've heard it said consistently from those that attend practice that Cobb had a lot of talent. That's been said since his freshman year. My point was more so that its hard to tell who will be the go to guy. Jones appears to have the most talent. Quite frankly I'm ok with RS all the incoming backs and I don't really expect all of them to stay at RB

It certainly was an option. Even Kill has publicly 2nd guessed his decision not to throw a redshirt on Cobb one of his first two seasons.

2011: 10 carries, 57 yards
2012: 1 carry, 8 yards

Not to get too far off topic, but did Lamonte Edwards ever end up playing football at a smaller school after he was dismissed from the team? I can't remember.

Well, as we haven't qualified for the B1GCG there are only 3 confirmed games left.

You are right oleboy. No one actually said that.

Add TE as another thing with no need to worry about for 2015.

I agree on redshirting but will point out that, if redshirted, Cobb would be a candidate to leave early. RBs have limited careers and carrying the ball another 300 times in 2015 might not benefit him all that much. It would benefit us though.

No one said that he wouldn't play until he learned how to block. Nobody said that Cobb was a disappointment after his Sophomore season?

You don't even try and get anything right do you "Spoofin"?
