Jalen Myrick’s fate rested in the hands of Tubby Smith.

Myrick was a lightly recruited cornerback from Bloomingdale, Ga., in 2012, so family friend Sherman Patterson reached out his buddy, Smith, the former Gophers men’s basketball coach.

Smith passed Myrick’s junior highlight film to the Minnesota football team’s staff; they liked Myrick’s speed and size and offered him a scholarship.

“Shoutout to Sherman,” Myrick said.

Myrick has pondered the serendipity of landing in Minnesota. What if Patterson didn’t have that connection at a Big Ten program? Which smaller school that showed interest would he have attended — Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana Lafayette or Middle Tennessee State?

“I wouldn’t even know,” he said.
