PiPress: Setting a tone: New staff testing Gophers on the field and in the classroom

The structure, the attention to detail, and the reasoning in Kill's methods are all so impressive. Man, I hope this guy succeeds. It's just that with our history of things like moving to the Dome because it would be good for the program, Holtz's quick exit, Mason's teams blowing leads, and Brewster's imploding after all the B.S., a small voice is warning me, "Careful, don't get suckered again."

I am sure a lot of people feel that way, and that is also why the program support is so luke warm, and "hot" coaches are afraid of the job. A lot of people would like them to do well but find it too painful when the team fails to take a chance and commit any emotion to it. Your basic Catch22.
The good news is that this coach has never had better support than the teams he competes with, actually probably worse, and won't use it for an excuse. He is "all in" on any job he takes. Maybe he'll get it done, and maybe he won't, but I like his chances and I'll do anything possible to support him.
Another way to look at it is, "What does that attempted detachment save you?" You still feel bad if they fail, at least if you try to help you know you have done everything you can do.

I'm a big believer in the philosophy of "take care of the little things and the bigger things will take care of themselves". It appears coach Kill is too, and I love it.
Things like the 6AM runs - maybe the bigger purpose of that is if you know you have to wake up that early and run are you likely to be out late at night getting into trouble? Make sure the kids are going to class (and not late to class) and there's a much better chance they'll be passing those classes.

There seems to be a consensus among our players that the new coaching staff is a lot tougher on them, but they also seem to like it. I have a job where I see a few of our players and coaches a few times a week. I've never thought twice about the Gopher spring game, and this year I've been reading and soaking up everything I can about these football practices. Maybe it is because I'm avoiding thinking about the Bball program right now, but either way I'm incredibly excited for Gopher football under Kill. There seems to be positive energy around Dinkytown that I haven't seen in my years as a Gopher fan.
