Senior cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun said his takeaway from the conversation was from Sawvel, also the special-teams coach. Sawvel said players need to relish doing "crappy jobs," such as blocking on the punt-return team.

Sawvel admitted that's not the message to recruits when Gophers coaches come into their living rooms while they're in high school.

"That really hit me because it shows me that, yeah, we all want to come here and be standouts on offense and defense, but you still have to do those little things that set up big plays," Boddy-Calhoun said.
