per Greder:

Gophers upperclassmen appreciate how coach Tracy Claeys lets them play in practices and games and corrects them later, although that doesn't mean Minnesota has a country-club atmosphere.

"We like to say that Coach Claeys is the type of guy that will send you home if you're not doing what you are supposed to be doing," said junior quarterback Mitch Leidner. "He's kind of like a silent assassin that way."

Claeys is more soft-spoken than predecessor Jerry Kill, whom Claeys replaced Oct. 28. Claeys, for instance, doesn't spend much time getting fiery in speeches to the team.

"The best motivation is what comes internal; that's playing for the love of the game," Claeys said. "If you have to motivate kids with a bunch of external things all the time, that motivation usually runs out at some time during the game."

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for posting this. This is a pretty interesting contrast.

I read "style points" and figured this was another GH post about coach's "outfit." Still can't believe there was a thread here criticizing his "outfit"

Claeys felt something amiss with offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover calling most of the run plays and quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowksi calling the passes. Under that format, Kill sometimes would be the final decision maker.

"I felt like that was best to have the offense straightened out and put one guy in charge, so everybody knew who the boss was," Claeys said.

Bingo.

Intrinsic motivation is vastly superior in almost every respect to extrinsic motivation in creating great individuals. I just wonder how much of the extrinsic motivation is needed in bonding a team together.

I think it's good to have a mix of personalities among the coaches, which I think we still have.

I didn't realize that Zebrowski called the passing plays, I knew he had input but I figured that Limegrover was the ultimate play caller. Interesting set up, and something I'm glad that Claeys has decided to rectify.

Too many chefs in the kitchen.....

Seems weird to me too. Who decides if it will be a run or pass play then? Weird.

Claeys is making this his team, everything he is saying you can step back and say, yeah that makes sense. I'm anxious to see the execution behind it next year.

Iv never heard of two play callers... So who decided pass or run?? I guess Kill??

This is impressing me about Cleays he has the balls to let go of two long time coaches.. Because we can all agree this doesn't work in the long run having two guys.

Great move!
