Nice to see both of these updates from Marcus:
Minnesota Gopher Paul Carter impressive in tour of China
By Marcus R. Fuller
Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith has heard about how much Paul Carter has improved this summer.
A 6-foot-8 forward for the University of Minnesota, Carter was one of eight players who participated in eight exhibition games in China with Sports Reach ministry program from May 23 last Thursday.
Carter led the team in scoring (15.6 points per game) and rebounding (11.0). His best game was a 19-point, 17-rebound performance.
"We have been following his progress," Smith said. "He played well. And it was something he needed to do. Paul hasn't really played a lot of games."
Before transferring to Minnesota, Carter missed several games at Missouri State-West Plains College after having hernia surgery. He missed five games because of an ankle sprain as a sophomore last season with the Gophers but managed to average 5.3 points and a team-leading 4.5 rebounds in 16 minutes a game.
"Finally, he's starting to come into his own," Smith said. "This year will be his first full year. I hope he can stay healthy."
Among the players on Carter's team in China were Alex Legion and Dominique Keller of Illinois and Oakdale native Kwadzo Ahelegbe of Northern Iowa.
Briefly: Smith said he was excited about having all of his incoming recruits scheduled to start summer school in a week, especially local standouts Rodney Williams Jr. of Cooper High School and Royce White of Hopkins.
"Royce and Rodney took care of their responsibilities," he said.
