Nice to see some coverage of Buggs:
"When my game is not going so well, Buggs is always there to crack a joke to get me going," Williams said. "Just having Buggs around is great."
Williams appreciated the encouragement he received from Buggs despite shooting a combined 3-for-16 from the field in recent losses at Northwestern and Wisconsin. No teammate was more ecstatic than Buggs to see Williams break out of the slump Tuesday with 23 points in the 84-65 win against Nebraska at home.
"He wants to go to the NBA this coming year, but all he needs to do is attack more," Buggs said. "He can do it, because I've seen him do it all the time in practice. I have just pushed him to keep working hard. Rodney has so much potential. I know he can do more than he shows sometimes, so I just keep talking to him about it."
"I also help him out working with the post moves," Williams said. "When he was in high school, he really didn't play the post; he was a shooter. I just try my best helping him out, working in the post and just keeping him positive. He's a lot like I was my freshman year, letting little things get to me. So that's just what I'm trying to do with Buggs."
Buggs, who played at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia last season, wanted to contribute as a true freshman this season at Minnesota. Williams didn't redshirt when he joined the Gophers out of Robbinsdale Cooper, so he can't imagine how hard it has been for his first-year teammate to sit and watch games.
"He's definitely taking it well," Williams said. "He's coming out here working hard every day in practice. He's doing a little bit extra after practice -- him and (freshman Wally Ellenson) with coach (Ron) Jirsa."
