PiPress: Maturi: Gophers in 'final stages' of coaching search

Not much new there.

"The leading candidates for the coaching position are believed to be San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, Temple coach Al Golden and Connecticut coach Randy Edsall."

IF win Floyd THEN keep Horton ELSE hire Mike Leach

If Jeff Horton wins back our PIG this afternoon then give Jeff and the staff a one year extension to see what they can do in 2011. If Floyd returns to Iowa City, then hire Mike Leach. If we don't hire Mike Leach, it really won't matter who we hire as the next head coach. We will be having similar conversations in another 36 to 48 months. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

I just hope we don't get a rookie with one good year in the big time (or no really good years in the big time). With all the money and all that is at stake, please, Joel, come up with Pinkel, Patterson, Harbaugh, Stoops, Petersen or somebody else at that level or close to it.

I thought the letter was surprisingly positive considering we're so far into the process. He talks about things going extremely well, that there are outstanding candidates and the need for secrecy while pursuing an established coach.

Why anyone would pay any attention to the list of candidates at the end of the story is beyond me. That's the media's list, not necessarily Maturi's. And the idea of giving Horton a one year extension is like using a bandaid when you need heart surgery.

I agree w/ Nov. 6.

Here is the Java code.

Game iowaGame = new Game();
iowaGame.setOpponentName("Iowa");

try {
if (iowaGame.didWin() == true) {
team.getCoach().retain(1);
} else {
team.fireCoach("see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya");
team.hireCoach(new Coach("Mike Leach"));
}
} catch (UnavailableCoachException e) {
team.getFans().bitchOnGopherHole();
bool foundCoach = false;
for (Coach coach : availableCoaches) {
if (team.hireCoach(coach)) {
foundCoach = true;
break;
}
}
if (foundCoach == false) {
team.leaveConference();
team.joinConference(new Conference("Big Sky Conference"));
}
} finally {
Board board = new Board("Gopher Hole");
team.getFans().whineOn(board);
}

Yes yes. We all know that Mike Leach is the second coming of Christ and that no other coach could POSSIBLY win. I mean. Mike Leach is the only coach who could win here. I mean, there are no other guys. Everyone else: 100% incompetent. We hire ANYONE but Mike Leach, we're staring down the barrel of half a decade of 2 or 3 win seasons.

Calhoun, Niumwhathaveyou, the other guys. None of them have ever won anywhere, right?

I'm glad someone finally gets it. Someone pin a medal on this guy.

I am as big of a Mike Leach supporter as there is on this board, but it's not going to happen and constantly trumpeting that idea isn't going to make it closer to a possibility (I hope i'm dead wrong on this).

The idea of retaining Horton isn't an option. He was part of this entire mess. Our biggest problem has been the inability to develop players, don't you think Horton bears some of that blame?

The guy doesn't have a good track record as a head coach, in fact his biggest accomplishment might have been beating Illinois with Tim Brewster's team.

What is with the love affair with Jeff Horton.

We need a fresh start - complete new staff, new philosophy, etc.

Correct. There would be a boycott if they gave the job to Horton. It makes no sense. Go get a big time coach to go with their big time stadium.
