When the NCAA allowed football programs to add a 10th on-field assistant coach this winter, the Gophers poured more resources into its defensive line.

“I think our performance on the D-line has to improve dramatically — it has to,” Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said at the start of spring practices on March 6. “And I think Joe Rossi is the guy to be able to get that done.”

Rossi replaces Bryce Paup as the primary defensive line coach, with Marcus West hired as an assistant specializing in pass rush. Paup, the former NFL defensive MVP, left the Gophers in February; Rossi was promoted from within the U staff; and West comes from Austin Peay, where he was co-defensive coordinator and D-line coach.
