With three key cornerbacks out because of suspensions, the Gophers plan to start true freshman Coney Durr in the Holiday Bowl against pass-oriented Washington State on Tuesday.

The suspensions of 10 players tied to an alleged sexual assault have hit the Gophers secondary the hardest, with starting corner KiAnte Hardin and contributors Antonio Shenault and Ray Buford among those sidelined.

Those losses pushed Durr into an unfamiliar role on the opposite side of mainstay starting cornerback Jalen Myrick. Durr’s season has been abbreviated by injury, and he has played sparingly when healthy, totaling two tackles across six games.

“I would be more nervous if it was three or four days of practice,” Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said Monday. “But that is not the case. We’ve had plenty of practice. My main thing is he will battle. He will keep battling, and we’ll see what happens.”
