The Gophers ranked 91st in the nation last year with 22 sacks in 13 games. This spring, Minnesota has focused on becoming better rushers and blitzers.

“Not a lot of expectations for the D-line coming in from some people outside the program,” said end Gaelin Elmore. “I think we’ve competed well and showed up a little bit this spring.”

With ends Theiren Cockran and Alex Keith departed, Elmore and Hank Ekpe are the first options to step up. Elmore had 3.5 tackles for lost yards and 1.5 sacks last season.

“We’ve got a lot of guys that haven’t had a lot of playing time here,” Elmore said. “If we can be consistent, we can add a completely new element to the defense this year.”

It may serve the team well in the long run to find ways to get as many bench warmers on the field to gain game experience. At the end of the season when injuries mount, it may become a factor. My $0.02.
