The Gophers (5-3) had better come to play Tuesday, because their next opponent, South Dakota State, is better than South Dakota. The Jackrabbits (7-1) already have a road win against a major-conference opponent (Texas Christian).

They also have a starter from Minnesota in center Ian Theisen from Osseo and a transfer from Wisconsin in guard George Marshall.

"The most frustrating part is Coach warns us every single day that (Big Ten) teams are losing these so-called guaranteed games," Gophers senior Joey King said. "This time we didn't take it to heart."

Minnesota saw its 47-game nonconference home win streak come to an end Saturday. Now the Gophers will try to avoid losing back-to-back nonconference home games for the first time since the 1977-78 season, when they fell to then-No. 4 Marquette and Nebraska at the Barn.

Going 0-2 against South Dakota schools would obviously be much worse, yet the Gophers wouldn't be the first Big Ten team this season to drop consecutive home games.

Ohio State lost to Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech, its first back-to-back nonconference home losses since 1963. The Buckeyes had a four-game losing streak at one point.

Other Big Ten home streaks came to an end this season, as well. Wisconsin lost its first home opener in 17 years to lowly Western Illinois. Illinois fell to North Florida and Chattanooga at home to open the season 1-3, which was the program's worst start in 50 years.
