Every time the Gophers’ offense gets into the red zone, they score a touchdown. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that each time opponents Oregon State and Indiana State got into the red zone in the Gophers’ first two games, they also scored touchdowns.

Minnesota (2-0) is one of three teams in the nation to score touchdowns every time they get inside an opponent’s 20-yard line, 9 for 9 this season, joining Michigan State and Florida Atlantic. The Spartans and Gophers each have played two games. The Owls, on the other hand, have been in the red zone only three times in three games.

The Gophers have allowed touchdowns on all six of their opponents’ possessions in the red zone, all on passes. Linebacker Jack Lynn sees small, self-inflicted reasons for that.

“Little things here and there: Busted coverage, D-linemen not slanting where they’re supposed to, linebacker out of position,” Lynn said. “Just one or two things here or there really costs you a big play, and that’s one of the things we needed to fix — and have been fixing in this bye week.”
