per Marcus:

Freshmen running back Berkley Edwards and receiver Eric Carter appear talented enough to make plays for offense this year.

"I think Berkley has been doing a great job, being another guy in this last week really separating himself once we started to hit each other," Nelson said. "We know he can break a tackle and take it 60 yards. That's something we need.

"I think (Carter) has been doing a great job with learning the offense. He's almost starting to kind of know that even when we're supposed to run a certain route, he can convert it to something else and get himself open."

Gophers fall camp Day 13: Freshman CB Jalen Myrick gaining notice

• Coach Jerry Kill came away pleased after the Gophers' second scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday, while still acknowledging his team's inconsistencies and obvious areas in need of tweaking.

The Gophers ran through various scenarios in the situational scrimmage -- two-minute drill, hurry-up offense, clock management, etc -- and mixed in several elements from the kicking game.

"We put some guys in some tough positions, put some heat on some guys to see how they handled things," Kill said. "I think both sides had their moments. I'm anxious to see the film."

Go Gophers!!

I bet Berkley is going to see a lot of playing time - he looks like he's gong to be a stud!

What a misleading headline. The writer was not saying the offense was better than the defense. He said the offense was ahead of the defense as far as settling on who the starters would be. Sort of like me racing against U Bolt and deciding before Bolt what brand of shoes I was going to wear. Yeah, I could say I was ahead of him...but I wouldn't go to Vegas and bet on me.

I love every inch of Gopher coverage. But the focus seems to be on the periphery. Corner backs, wide receivers, running backs. And the battles are at Offensive Tackle, Linebacker. More insight as to the internals.

As far as I can tell, the Defense is way ahead of the Offense.
