Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel said Travis was the one defensive player the Gophers couldn’t afford to lose in 2014. That year, Murray and Boddy-Calhoun were named All-Big Ten players, while Travis didn’t receive conference accolades.

“(Travis) played nickel; he played safety; he was … our best overall player,” Sawvel said. “Great cover guy, good in the box, but he was also our best special teams player.”

To illustrate his value, Sawvel said Travis played 110 defensive and special-teams plays against TCU, which boasted Heisman Trophy candidate Treyvone Boykin and wide receiver Josh Doctson, a possible first-round pick in the NFL draft.

“When we lost (Travis) last year, we had to replace him with three different guys on special teams, and we had to try to figure out a way to fix some of his production on defense, which we couldn’t quite do,” Sawvel said.
