per Greder:
With 80 teams needed to fill a record-high 40 bowl games, there could be a shortage of eligible teams. The NCAA has contingency plans, but Minnesota and Illinois will try to assist the governing body by further sorting it out on the field Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.
“We look at these last two games as a two-game playoff,” Gophers receiver KJ Maye said. “We’ve got to win these two to go to a bowl game. It comes down to how much we want it as a team and how much each individual wants it.”
With two weeks to go, only 63 teams have reached six or more wins, the official criterion for bowl-eligibility in a standard 12-game schedule. Seventeen programs are on the cusp with five wins, including Illinois (5-5), and 12 teams with four wins, including Minnesota (4-6).
Winning definitively solves both teams’ problems, but this year, five wins might be enough.
“We will cross that road when we get to it,” Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said. “The thing is that we have a two-game season left, and we are going to concentrate on winning the last two.”
