Growing up in Green Bay, Wis., Emmit Carpenter and Peter Mortell punted some footballs that soared 50 yards over Sweet Water Court cul-de-sac. From their front yards, well-hit balls would sometimes ricochet off the roofs of their families’ homes, knock out a light or crash into delicate landscaping.

“Sometimes you get a hold of it and can’t control it,” Mortell said, with a laugh. “There were footballs flying everywhere.”

From there, Mortell became the Gophers’ starting punter during his sophomore season in 2013. He returned to Green Bay and practiced on a regular field with Carpenter, then-kicker at Ashwaubenon High School.

Mortell offered advice based on Carpenter’s kicks that, on these occasions, landed harmlessly on the turf. He told Carpenter to send a DVD of his highlights to Jay Nunez, then-Gophers’ special teams quality control assistant coach.

“I knew he was better than the interest he was getting coming out of high school,” Mortell said.
