per Greder:

Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said his offense’s third-down-and-short conversion rate is about 20 percent under his expectations.

At the halfway mark of the season, Minnesota has converted on 11 of 18 attempts (61 percent) from 2 yards or closer. The Gophers maintained that mark by going 3 for 5 on third and short in a 31-10 win over Maryland on Saturday.

“You’d like to get that above 75 percent … 80-plus,” Claeys said.

Offensive coordinator Jay Johnson put his benchmark even higher. “I think you need to be 100 percent on third and short,” he said.

Go Gophers!!

When everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run it up the middle...

3rd and inside a yard should always be a QB sneak, especially when you have a big QB like Leidner in the game.

Exactly. Stop running out of the Pistol in these situations. The line is not good enough.

You might have a point, but I HATE the QB sneak, especially when its near the goal line. I don't care if the QB is 6'4," 230, he's standing there flat footed, has no forward momentum, it sucks. The failed sneak against Michigan is one example that makes my point. (Ok there are some instances where it works, and I think that sneak is more effective when done at least 20 yards from the goal line). But in cases at the goal line (even less than a yard from the goal line), even if he ends up scoring, the refs will have to come running in, dig through the pile, and decision is up to them. I loved how Holtz ran the wishbone near the goal line. Even if the team is not an option team, I think that a goal line package can be put in. The wishbone/down the line option, is a b!tch to defend at near the goal line.

The correct answer, of course, is Green Right Strong Slot Spider 2 Y Banana.

Nobody throws more bananas than the Stanford Cardinal. Gotta love Gruden.
