The Gophers needed an 18-yard field goal by kicker Ryan Santoso in overtime to beat Colorado State 23-20 last season.

This season, Santoso moved to punter, and Emmit Carpenter has taken over place-kicking duties. Through two games, Carpenter, who has been working with long snapper Payton Jordahl and holder Jake Herbers. is 4 for 4, with all his field goals coming in the 40- to 49-yard range.

“What we’ve accomplished so far as a whole unit has set the bar really high, and we all have high expectations going forward,” Carpenter said.

Coach Tracy Claeys has been satisfied with the changes.

“You got to remind them that that happened because they worked extremely hard in practice and done all those types of kicks,” Claeys said. “They can’t let up, either, and say it’s going to happen naturally. That’s when you get in trouble, when you take things for granted.”

Go Gophers!!

He's doing great, but I hope they quit with the directional kick-off strategy. He's knocked at least two out of bounds with that. Not really his fault because that what's been called, but he's got the leg to put it deep in the end zone so I can't figure out why they just don't do that instead. Too much over-thinking these days.
