per Marcus:
Gophers coach Jerry Kill was hoping to let freshman offensive lineman Connor Mayes sit out this season with a redshirt year.
But almost halfway into the season, that plan changed with starting right guard Foster Bush out with a concussion.
In last Saturday's 24-17 victory over Northwestern, Kill and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover decided to play Mayes in place of Bush.
Not question Mayes, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound former high school All-American from Alstyne, Texas, was ready physically. But he's still developing mentally on and off the field.
"But we have to do it," Kill said at his Tuesday news conference. "We're doing what we can. But you'd like to redshirt them all because it gives them a chance to mature in the classroom."
