Tracy Claeys knew it wasn't ideal for two of his upperclassman starters to be replaced by true freshmen in the University of Minnesota's big game Saturday against Iowa.

But the Gophers defensive coordinator had to send a message to leading tackler Damien Wilson and last year's All-Big Ten performer, Theiren Cockran, so Everett Williams and Gaelin Elmore took their place.

Surprisingly, the Gophers weren't hampered at all in a resounding 51-14 win over the Hawkeyes. That just shows how much they benefited from playing so many freshmen earlier this season.

Nine true freshmen played Saturday, including seven from the defensive side, in the most dominating performance under fourth-year coach Jerry Kill for the Gophers (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten), who face a bigger challenge Saturday against No. 8 Ohio State (8-1, 5-0) at TCF Bank Stadium.

"It's tremendous because it shows you what we have and what the future looks like," junior cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun said. "They look good out there."
