per Greder:
Former Gophers punter Peter Mortell worked out with Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer during Minnesota’s pro day Monday.
With unseasonably warm weather, Mortell was able to punt on an outdoor practice field and not have to settle for his punts hitting the low ceiling at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex. Outdoors, he tried to focus on punt placement, pooch punts and hang time. The workout was filmed and will be shared with interested NFL teams.
“I’m hitting punts bigger, higher and farther than I ever have, so I’m feeling really good now,” Mortell said. “These next few months are important for me. That’s for sure.”
In the past 10 NFL drafts, 18 punters have been selected.
“I’m not anticipating that happening, but ideally I just want to get into a camp,” said Mortell, who led the Big Ten in punts of 50-plus yards (20) and punts downed inside the 20-yard line (26) in the regular season.
