PiPress: Former Florida Gator eager to lead Minnesota Gophers' defense

I'm sure Beal has a lot of rust to shake off, but I bet once he gets churning, look out!

"Beal missed his first two seasons at Florida while trying to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Beal, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound sophomore, said he decided to transfer to get a fresh start once he learned from the NCAA he still had four years of eligibility left."

I see he's listed at a Soph. Did the transfer year count as one year? I'm always confused on such issues...

Did the transfer year count as one year?

Yes.

You can use your redshirt during your transfer year, but since he had already used his (plus a medical hardship waiver for 2009), he had to lose a year of eligibility last year. He will have 3 years left to play 3, although it is important to remember that he is eligible to leave for the draft after this year. (Technically, he was even eligible for the 2011 draft, but obviously that wasn't going to happen.)

We need to get better at each position. Come on Mr. Beal! I am counting on you to make that happen at MLB.

I don't see him leaving after this year due to getting back in and acclimated to the game. If he lives up to his hype, it is very possible he leaves after the 2012 season. He'll be 23 around that time I believe.

Leaving? Will he be taking a vacation somewhere?

Sorry for the smart a** comment but this guy hasn't played a down and I know you said "if he lives up to his hype" but I think we really need to bring it down a bit.

Jags - go to practice

Attend a practice or two. Beal is the real deal.

He had over 70 scholarships coming out of high school. That is a lot of hype.

I'd like to get over and see one. I'm glad to hear that and I don't mean to say that those that have seen him aren't correct. My only thing is that I have a strong dose of Gopher football history skepticism that a guy would transfer here from Fla and be so good that we'd be talking about him leaving early before even playing a down. Sounds very Royce White-like to me (which is probably an awful comparison in many ways).
