per Greder:
The Gophers have 18 takeaways (11 fumbles, seven interceptions) this season that they’ve converted into 69 points. They turned three Illini fumbles into 17 points on Saturday.
“First of all, our offense is doing a great job not turning the ball over,” Rallis said. “Defensively, getting turnovers is about playing hard; get to the ball, good things will happen. Second guy in, he might punch it out. You might put a helmet on it and it will squirt out.”
Gophers coach Tracy Clayes credits putting more pressure on the quarterback on all the loose balls. Minnesota has 19 sacks through eight games this year, which compares to 12 at this point last year. That tally doesn’t account for added hits and pressures on the QB.
“We’ve gotten some balls thrown that they probably wouldn’t throw if there wasn’t pressure on him,” Claeys said. “And then the fumbles, a lot, if I’m not mistaken, are in the backfield, are tackles for losses. … We didn’t have all that much pressure a year ago.”
