Gophers point guard Andre Hollins will get a chance to prove he's one of the top college basketball players in country as he was invited to tryouts for the World University Games team, coach Richard Pitino said Saturday.

Hollins, who led the University of Minnesota with 14.6 points and 3.5 assists a game last season, will compete in training camp June 24-July 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Trevor Mbakwe, who was a senior forward last season, was a member of the World University Games team in China that finished fifth place in 2011. The World University Games are scheduled for July 6-17 in Russia this year.

"Andre got invited to be with USA basketball," Pitino said during the Gophers' caravan tour. "So he's going to try out for that. Hopefully he makes it, because it will be a great experience for him."

Go Gophers!!

What a huge honor for him to be considered. If he makes the team, it can only help him out playing against top talent.

Congrats, Dre!

Not that that team gets a lot of publicity to the mainstream, however, it will definately help in getting 'Dre's face out to the public. He is a very loveable guy and the more public he becomes the better for the program (and for 'Dre). Once can hope for a relationship to grow between coach P and 'Dre that is very camera friendly. Izzo gets a lot of pub for being very player friendly, 'Dre getting to be more of a public figure with a bran new coach can only help the public persona of UMN Basketball which in turn gets recruits.
