Jon Celestin has maintained his hard-hitting reputation with the Gophers new coaching staff.

Known as to teammates as “Thumper,” Celestin is now known to Minnesota defensive coordinator/linebacker coach Robb Smith as the Gophers’ best tackler.

“I think the guy that sets the tempo for us defensively is Jon Celestin,” Smith said. “He’s solid. You know what you get every day. … We had a great tackling drill the other day that he stepped up (in) and he had some great battles there.”

I like to think of "best tackler" as not so much the hardest hitter. I see way too many guys going for the home run type hit rather than good tackle.


Still, it certainly can be the same guy.

Defensive end Carter Coughlin puts safety Duke McGhee in the mix for the team’s hardest-hitter label.

But, thinking about it a bit, the other association I come up with for "Thumper" is from the novel 'Dune,' where a 'thumper' was a device used to summon a sandworm.
