When Mike Grant gathered his Eden Prairie football team at midfield after practice Wednesday, the coach didn’t hype the Eagles’ Class 6A playoff opener against Eagan on Friday.

Grant had to investigate a housekeeping item of players accidentally mixing up helmets. It concluded an unassuming prep for Eden Prairie, winners of 10 state championships since 1996 and an important pipeline to the Gophers program. It’s a path that is well-traveled.

Former Eden Prairie and current Gophers defensive end Carter Coughlin was the top-rated recruit from Minnesota in the 2016 class. Through four Big Ten games this season, he is blossoming with three and a half sacks and three more tackles for lost yards heading into Minnesota’s rivalry game at Iowa on Saturday.

Eden Prairie cornerback Benny Sapp III, the top-rated in-state recruit in the 2018 class, committed to the Gophers in February. Out for this season with a torn meniscus in his left knee, Sapp wore a maroon-and-gold pullover and Gophers lanyard on Eden Prairie’s sideline Wednesday. He’s amped for both Friday’s and Saturday’s games.

On the field, Eagles junior quarterback Cole Kramer, Coughlin’s cousin, zipped passes during the light practice. In the 2019 class, he has received strong interest but no scholarship offer yet from the Gophers.
