McKenzie quit basketball in 2011 because of a serious hip injury that cut short a pro career overseas and in the NBA Development League. He hadn’t been healthy for several years — ever since he played for Oklahoma and transferred to finish his career at the University of Minnesota seven years ago.
He grew up around music, hearing his grandfather’s rhymes every day, or the piano and saxophone blaring from neighbors such as gospel singer Fred Steele, father of legendary producer Jimmy Jam. It was as natural for McKenzie to dream of a future record deal as it was to dream of making millions in the NBA.
When one dream ended, the other took shape.
