per Greder:
Before sunrise Thursday, the Gophers’ Leadership Council had filled the first two rows in the team’s meeting room at the Gibson Nagurski Football Complex.
As they drank orange juice and ate donuts, new head coach P.J. Fleck faced the quorum of 36 mostly player-selected representatives and asked about issues requiring his attention.
Senior linebacker Jon Celestin requested plastic cutlery in the player’s lounge — not exactly a deep issue, but they would cut into heavier topics later on.
Fleck granted Celestin’s simple request, then distributed a five-page outline of bullet points and charts originally hand-written on a yellow legal pad and then copied for the players to consume.
Thursday’s topic: “Communicating vs. Connecting.”
Fleck started the Leadership Council when he took Western Michigan from 1-11 in 2013 to 13-1 and a Cotton Bowl berth last season. The group consists of players hand-picked by teammates to represent each class, rounded out by those Fleck believes can become leaders.
“Everybody has leadership qualities inside you, but we either choose to bring it out or someone has to pull it out for us,” he said.
The Leadership Council has 32 weekly classes.
“I teach it,” said Fleck, who a sixth-grade social studies teacher before following a career in football. “… They don’t get credits for it. Wish they did. Maybe I could become a professor, too.
“We need to develop a ton of leadership on this football team, especially with the inexperience we have and especially with a lot of guys that possibly will play in the fall that are hurt (during spring practices).”
