It was probably foolish to expect Minnesota to drill a Pac-12 opponent in its 2016 opener, even one as suspect as Oregon State, which went 0-9 in conference play last season and probably won’t do much better this year. But a little pizzazz would have been nice; a little something for the fans.
Minnesota’s 30-23 victory in a prime time opener at TCF Bank Stadium would have been a dud had the Gophers not come so close to losing. This was not the excitement the Gophers faithful were expecting.
Outside of two forced fumbles by true freshman lineman Tai’Yon Devers, which kept the Gophers in this one early, there was little for a robust crowd to cheer. The rushing game looked pedestrian, the passing game inadequate, and the secondary routinely allowed receivers to get behind them.
No, this will not do.
