per Greder:
When Conor Rhoda made his first collegiate start last season against Maryland, the Gophers quarterback hadn't really been hit since his senior year at Cretin-Derham Hall in 2012.
After being a backup and scout-team member, the Eagan native was looking to feel like a real football player again. Now with three more starts this season, Rhoda feels like he's grown in many areas heading into Saturday's Big Ten opener against Maryland.
First, the experience in last season's 31-10 victory in College Park, Md., showed Rhoda "this really is like practice; that was the biggest thing."
Now as a fifth-year senior, Rhoda said in film study and preparation with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kirk Ciarrocca that he feels more "fine-tuned on little things now."
When Rhoda expressed a desire to get hit last October, his offensive linemen dutifully chimed in: "We won't let you get hit."
"I remember a couple (hits) where I was the pocket there and I took a big blow after throwing it that I was kind of like, 'OK, this is the Big Ten now,' " Rhoda said. "But it wasn't anything that really blew me away."
