Blaise Andries, the top recruit in Minnesota in the 2017 recruiting class, won’t redshirt during his freshman season with the Gophers.

“Blaise is gonna have to play,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said Friday of the offensive lineman from Marshall, Minn.

The Gophers’ projected starting offensive tackles are junior Donnell Greene and senior Garrison Wright. Both have missed time during fall training camp with undisclosed injuries, putting Andries into the mix sooner than Fleck would prefer.

Minnesota had as few as four offensive linemen on the field during spring practices, and while the Gophers have had five centers during camp, overall depth remains a paramount concern up front.

“You’d like to be able to redshirt everybody,” Fleck said. “I’d love to be able to redshirt Demetrius Douglas, Nate Umlor — all our freshmen. But when you are put in a position in Year 1, you have got to put 11 out there. Then you have to have some backups in case someone gets hurt, and you have to train that way.”

Go Gophers!!

He is elite in the classroom, detailed orientated. He has talent, size, strength, and good footwork. He is coached by probably the best offensive line coach who has seen what it takes in the Big 10, Ed Warinner. He must have shown some ability to learn from any mistakes and perform better every practice. The player who can come in at 18 and start is rare, but Blaise is all that. This is not desperation, rather finding the best 11.

FWIW, I'm at a HS volleyball showcase event. Marshall is playing next and Andries' sister is starting for Marshall. 5'10" sophomore - just got a kill on a tip at the net.

If he's ready, he's ready. Sound like he's already jumped a guy or two. Highly ranked guys are usually more game ready and we need him. The first of many offensive line star recruits.

Fleck said he's gonna have to play. And that he'd prefer to redshirt him.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement but shows our lack of depth on the o-line.

His muscles are still only 18.5 year old...this is not good. Good for him that he passed others on the depth chart, but that says less about him and more about the mess left from the previous staff (they did recruit him - so good job on that).

Agree. If he is the best at his position, he plays.

This is a pretty silly post.

We don't know how long or how good his training program was. This isn't 1970; due to widely available sports science on the web and improved high school training programs it's reasonable that a guy in his late teens could have pretty good power and strength numbers. Marginal improvements can be had, but if we're going to have a more mobile line instead of cavemen then maybe it doesn't matter as much. And maybe I'm talking out of my posterior.

This is a pretty silly post.

Well - maybe you'll be right and he will be excellent right off the bat as an 18 year old. Seriously, I hope you are...since when is it silly to assume that true freshman linemen need a redshirt year no matter how talented (high 3-star...eye roll) they are. But - as we know, your entire routine is based on bashing this staff when they fall short of the arbitrary win totals of your fat prince.

Classy.

Kind of beneath you don't you think?

Fair enough, not silly but pretty baseless (the muscle comment "this is not good"). If he has shown to be best at his position, why would he not play?

Bashing this staff? Please look at my posts. Said many times Fleck put together a great staff. That's why I have the expectation I do. Said the WR and QB position and offense should get better under this staff. Posted many times if Fleck can't unlock Still's talent then noboby can.

You continue to show your true colors more and more with each post.
