"I've always felt like to have a successful team you've got to have a few bad citizens on the team," Pinkett said on WSCR-AM (670). "That's how Ohio State used to win all the time. They would have two or three guys that were criminals and that just adds to the chemistry of the team. I think Notre Dame is growing because maybe they have some guys that are doing something worthy of a suspension which creates edge on the football team.

"You can't have a football team full of choirboys. You get your butt kicked if you've got a team full of choirboys so you've got to have a little bit of edge. But the coach has to be the dictator and the ultimate ruler. Here's my opinion: You don't hand out suspensions unless you know you've got somebody behind that guy that can make plays."

Go Gophers!!

It doesn't seem to me that "bad citizen" and "team player" go hand in hand. It doesn't create an "edge" for players to commit acts worthy of suspension. I'd rather have a well-disciplined player on the field. If you will only suspend a player if that player can be easily replaced, this creates discipline problems. For one, it tells they player that the coach isn't the ultimate authority, the star players start feeling they are in charge. That attitude starts filtering down to the players who aren't the biggest stars.

The so-called "choirboys" can hit every big as hard as can the bad citizens. The "choirboys" are the ones to push themselves to reach their maximum potential.

To me, that's a disappointing thing to read. I never want to see college sports infuse a criminal-like element so that teams can be kept "on edge".

There's too much of that crap that I have to read every day. As long as a kid is getting a free ride, hold on to some expectations for character and behavior. Somewhere within all of this, they're still getting an education, correct?

This.

One of the truly dumbest things I have ever seen somebody say. Statements like this are why a certain segment of society will always view football players as little more than thugs.

Can only hope that Notre Dame gives him some time off for stating such utter stupidity.
