I know I know... I am starting a thread and I am a 1st time poster... I apologize. However I didn't want to jump onto to the ZL thread and have anyone think I was part of the family.

I have read the board for about 4 or 5 years, but I have just watched from afar... but I have always had this question ~ it has to do with a players particular strength... like Blake's shooting, a piece of the puzzle for the team, verses a player who is versatile who can do many things really well... but not one thing great, like Paul Carter or Damien J. (I don't mean they didn't do great things)

Sometimes the guys who are versatile and bring the intangibles to the game are not as highly rated or recruited because coaches are looking for a piece... a big, a shooter... an athlete.
So I am wondering what everyone thinks...?

Thanks for posting! Ridiculous how some people on this board have made people walk on egg shells. You shouldn't have to apologize, or follow a handbook to post on a message board.

To me, every player develops their role on a team, given enough time and patience. That role could be defensive specialist, shooter, ect but could also be a combination. What a coach has to decide is what lineups to play that maximizes each players' strengths, creates mismatches, and has as few weaknesses as possible.

well the cop out answer is you have to have a nice mix...a team full of role players/versatile players won't do much. A team of all shooters could pull off some upsets but wouldn't be consistent. a team of all pure scorers would have chemistry problems.

Good points... I agree with all the posts :).

I see Austin as a versatile player -with some areas being stronger than others... for example his defense is > than ball handling.
Do you guys think we have enough players with the intangibles? Do you think the staff should go after more guys like that or do we need more "stars"

We have no other shooters than Blake right now. I wish we had a role player that was a shooter.

Hopefully Austin gets some confidence and is that guy. He was a pretty highly regarded shooter out of HS and as he plays for BT minutes and gets some shots to fall (like tonight) he will be a solid shooter.

What a lot of people forget is what a GREAT shooter Blake is. Very few teams have even one shooter like Blake. Austin or anyone else doesn't need to be Blake, but just hit open shots when they have them.
